Lueders

Leadership Transition at Highland and WACO

With the retirement of Ken Crawford, who served as the shared superintendent for Highland and WACO, the districts welcome Spencer Lueders as their new leader.

Lueders brings a strong background in education, having served as principal at Maquoketa and Central DeWitt from 2021 to 2025, and as an elementary teacher in multiple districts from 2014 to 2021. Growing up in a graduating class of just 56 students, he understands the unique value of small, rural school systems and is eager to bring that sense of community pride to Highland and WACO.

Although his official start date was July 1, Lueders began preparing for the role months earlier, working alongside Crawford while continuing his principal duties in DeWitt. This early transition helped him gain a deep understanding of district operations and build connections with staff before stepping into the position.

One of Lueders’ first changes will be splitting his time evenly between Highland and WACO. Unlike the previous schedule where most of the week was spent in Highland and one day in WACO, this balanced approach will allow him to develop relationships and focus on the needs of both districts equally.

The district thanks Ken Crawford for his years of dedication and service, and looks forward to working with Spencer Lueders as he leads both communities into the future.
