🏀💪 Summer Adventures have been on the move!
This week, our Summer Adventures Daycare Program embraced its Sports & Fitness theme with a pair of special guests who helped make learning active, engaging, and fun.
A big thank you to Cam Larson and several Highland basketball players for spending time with our kids teaching dribbling skills, leading through basketball drills, and encouraging teamwork. We also appreciate Sara Mullinix for leading two energetic fitness sessions that kept our kids moving and smiling.
Experiences like these help our students build healthy habits, confidence, and a love for staying active—all while making great summer memories.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make this week such a success!

🌿📚 Ainsworth Summer Library for Our Huskies Update! 📚🌿 This week we explored the stem—one of the most important parts of a plant! 🌱 We learned about all the jobs a stem does and even talked about some tasty stems we eat! 🥦🌽 After reading Two Sticks, our young creators turned tree cookies into amazing animals! 🦋🦉🐻🐞🐍🐯 The creativity on display was incredible, and it’s always so much fun to see what happens when kids are given supplies, ideas, and the freedom to create. ❤️ A huge THANK YOU to Cindy Gonterman for generously donating the tree cookies! 🌳💚 Your kindness helped make this week’s activity extra special! 🇺🇸 Reminder: There will be NO Summer Library on July 2. We are proud to celebrate Highland High School for earning the prestigious Carrie Chapman Catt Award with an outstanding 92% voter registration rate among eligible seniors! 👏
📊 By the Numbers:
✅ 121 Iowa high schools participated in the Carrie Chapman Catt Award program this year.
✅ 75 schools earned recognition for reaching voter registration milestones.
🏆 Only 49 schools achieved a 90% or higher voter registration rate, earning the highest level of recognition—and Highland was one of them with an impressive 92%!
This achievement reflects the dedication of our students, staff, and community to civic engagement and responsible citizenship. We are proud of our Huskies for making their voices heard and preparing to participate in our democracy. 🐾🎓✨

Last week, participants at our Summer Reading Program at Ainsworth had a great time learning about the "fruit" part of a plant. We read The Sour Grape by Jory Jon and made fruit magnets using perler beads. Unfortunately, I was busy guarding the hot iron and only got a few pictures!
We have already had five super readers earn all their prizes by completing a blackout on their bingo cards! Way to go, Holden, Leyland, Verena, Rylon, and Parklynn!
We will meet again this Thursday from 9:30-10:45 AM. It's not too late to join us-hope to see you there!
Yesterday, Janelle Sulhoff, Highland Elementary’s PK–5 Instructional Coach and New Teacher Induction Coach, presented at the 2026 Iowa Science of Reading Summit hosted by the Iowa Reading Research Center.
Selected as an individual presenter, Janelle shared Highland Elementary’s coaching and professional development model through her session, From Professional Learning to Practice: A Leadership Model for Instructional Change. Her presentation highlighted the intentional work happening to strengthen instruction, support educators, and improve outcomes for students.
We are incredibly proud of Janelle and grateful for the impact she continues to make at Highland!
