February 3, 2022

Greta Piette, 8th grade, has received Gold Key recognition in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, presented by Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, University of Iowa, for her short story, "Silent Dancers." Gold Key recognition is the highest award. Highland is in the Midwest region, which includes Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, and St. Louis.

Piette's work was recognized by a panel of creative professionals as the most outstanding work submitted among her peers. According to the Belin Blank website (artandwriting.org), "Jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards' core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Originality is defined as "work that breaks from convention, blurs the boundaries between genres, and challenges notions of how a particular concept or emotion can be expressed." Technical skill is defined as "work that uses technique to advance an original perspective or a personal vision or voice, and shows skills being utilized to create something unique, powerful, and innovative." Emergence of a personal voice or vision is defined as "work with an authentic and unique point of view and style."

Since 1923, the Awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol. Gold Key works are automatically advanced to the national level of adjudication in New York City. Gold Key entries are automatically considered for national awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal with Distinction, Silver Medal, and scholarship awards.

CONGRATULATIONS, GRETA!!
