What a great weekend for the Highland Huskies! Several Highland athletes traveled to Des Moines this Thursday-Saturday for the State Track Meet. For those of you who missed out on the track and field action this weekend, here's a recap. On Thursday, Emily Yahnke, shattered the school record in the long jump, soaring to 17 feet 8 1/2 inches, and clenched the 1A State Title. Aly Stokes also competed in the long jump for the Huskies on Thursday, jumping a season best 16 feet one and a quarter inches, to earn her an 11th place finish. Emily also competed in the 100 meter dash prelims on Thursday, securing her spot in the finals with a blazing fast 12.60. On Friday, the girls 4x200 final with Sarah Scheider, Alyson Stokes, Kristy Thomann and Emily Yahnke, placed 3rd with a season best time of 1:48.08. In the boy's discus, Zack Lasek, showed that he could be cool under pressure with a career best throw of 134 feet 6 inches, placing him 11th overall, and well above his seed coming into the meet. The same quartet from the 4x200, also ran in the 4x100 prelims on Friday, running a season best 51.44 and qualifying for the 4x100 finals on Saturday.  On Saturday, the medals just kept coming for both Emily Yahnke in the 100 meter dash final and the girls 4x100 of Sarah Schneider, Alyson Stokes, Kristy Thomann and Emily Yahnke. Emily raced to a 3rd place finish in the 100 meter dash and the 4x100 finished 4th.  Overall, the girls earned 27 points to help Highland end with a 8th place finish, making the Highland girls one of the top 10 teams in 1A. Go Huskies!
