Highland Middle School Students Attend the Iowa Choral Directors Association㒓泅 South Eastern Honor Choir

February 21, 2018

Twenty-five Highland students in grades 6-8 attended the annual Iowa Choral Directors Association’s South Eastern Honor Choir on February 2nd at Iowa Mennonite School.  For many students this was their 3rd year and for some it was their first year in attendance.  Students prepared music at home with a practice playlist on Mrs. Wagner’s honor choir youtube channel and at school in private and group lessons.

Students arrived at IMS at around 9:45am for an all-day mass rehearsal with students from other surrounding school districts who were also selected to participate.  There were two choirs who performed that evening at 7:00pm; a 5th and 6th grade honor choir, and a 7th and 8th grade honor choir.  As luck would have it, our own Mrs. Wagner was honored to be asked to direct the 5th and 6th grade honor choir, and celebrated conducting her 35th district honor choir that night.

As always, the students at Highland were well-behaved, well-prepared, used their manners, made friends and had their music memorized by that evening.  They even got a chance to see good friends from neighboring school districts and eat two meals with them.  The fine arts boosters provided funding for their meals, music and registration.  District honor choirs such as these are win-win situations, with a non-rival atmosphere where students leave feeling accomplished and soul-fed!  Thank you to all of their classroom teachers who helped them get their assignments done in advance so they could attend.
